Most Popular Halloween Outfits of 2012

The Dark Knight rises and PSY is surging, but classic costumes remain the most popular.

Americans will spend nearly $3 billion on Halloween costumes this year, and the majority of them will dress as witches, vampires, princesses and other traditional outfits.

The National Retail Federation’s 2012 Top Costumes survey reports that 10 percent of kids plan to dress as a princess, while six million adults plan to go as a witch.

Batman is the second most popular costume for kids, while the character—along with other characters from The Dark Knight—is fourth for adults.

Some people plan take their outfit cues from current events, whether it’s an athlete, political figure, or something else entirely.

“With nearly one in ten celebrants taking their costume cues from current events, we’ll see plenty of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney look-alikes out-and-about for Halloween,” said Pam Goodfellow, a director at the survey firm BIGinsight. “However, we expect these ‘rivals’ will be able to find some common ground over the punch bowl or a bag of candy.”

One outfit that’s been anecdotally popular has been that of South Korean rapper PSY, the musician behind the hit song "Gangnam Style" recently featured in a University of Maryland flash mob and viral video.

Shoppers have been coming to Halloween stores in to find the signature look of the entertainer.

“Now I’m thinking maybe I should get a blue tux, black sunglasses and a bow tie for those looking for it,” said one owner.

Pets will also play a big part in the holiday, as owners are expected to spend $370 million on outfits for the pets. The most popular costumes in that category are pumpkins, devils and hot dogs.

Last year Patch websites throughout the country sought the most original costume for a Halloween contest, and a headless boy from New Jersey took the top prize.

Congratulations graduates! May you be as successful in the next part of your journey as you were atRead More St. John School.

I don't live in your district and I am not a member of your party. I have watched you during yourRead More meetings with the commissioners and you handle things very well. You have a balance of private and public sector experience which is a necessary background to have to guide the county. It will be nice to have a competent person with your qualifications to run against someone who is totally unqualified but never had any opposition in the last election. Now she will have to attend the voter forums and explin her views and positions. Let the chips fall where they may. The emperor will have no clothes.

Wow, this is great news. Hopefully, 1 down and 4 to go!! Make sure Frazier shows up at theRead More political forums this time. She chose to miss every one last time, so she did not have to answer questions on her positions and her horrible record the first time around in 1998-2002. She will try to do that again to get re-elected.

If Frazier runs for reelection in 2014, I hope someone will have the nerve to ask her pointblank, onRead More camera, about her relationship to Roscoe Bartlett. Folks who've been around Carroll County for a while know the answer: there is no relation. She just tacked that on when she decided to run the first time. It may be her maiden name - or not - but she has never bothered to answer the question. She just let folks assume there is a connection, and lots of folks fell for it.
