SHA Plans to Relocate Rt. 97/Stone Road Intersection in 2013

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) announced today that it has allocated $3.3 million in funds for intersection improvements along Rt. 97 (Littlestown Pike) at the intersection with Stone Road in Carroll County.

“I am very pleased that this intersection will be improved,” said Carroll County Commissioner Robin Frazier in a statement.  “It has always been difficult for those traveling on both roads to see oncoming traffic and relocating the intersection will allow better sight distance and safer travels, especially with the increasing traffic on Route 97.  The state and county have worked well together on this intersection project and I look forward to its completion.”

Design for this project began in 2009 as SHA and Carroll County sought to enhance safety and sight distance at the intersection.  Stone Road is being relocated 1,100 feet north of its existing location creating a new intersection with MD 97 according to a news release.  The new access will allow SHA to preserve local historical structures and limit the need to purchase private property to construct the improvement.

The new traffic pattern will provide designated turn lanes from MD 97 onto Stone Road, and a designated right turn lane from eastbound Stone Road onto southbound Rt. 97.  Once complete, Rt. 97 will have one northbound lane, one southbound lane, and safety barrier in this area.

SHA will accommodate bikes use on both northbound and southbound Rt. 97 after construction.  Stone Road will also have two travel lanes.  Once construction is complete, the existing access to Stone Road will be closed off to traffic and may be renamed Old Stone Road.  Construction is expected to begin spring 2013.
