Storm Results in Power Outages, Water Problems

Cooling centers will be open Sunday throughout the county.

As a result of Friday night, some residents are dealing with power outages and water shortages.

In the Eldersburg and Sykesville region many residents were without water Saturday morning or have low pressure due to loss of power to the pumping stations.

Carroll County Department of Public works is working to restore the pumping capabilities temporarily until commercial power can be restored according to a release.

Baltimore Gas and Electric said it is aware of the situation and is working to restore power across the state. As of 6 p.m. Saturday, Carroll County had 1,993 customers still without power and 3,697 who had power restored.

“BGE crews continue to assess the damage to our system while aggressively working to restore power to public safety facilities such as hospitals, 911 centers, water treatment and pumping facilities as well as the company’s 33kV feeder network, which provides the backbone for BGE’s electric distribution network,” said Jeannette M. Mills, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE in a statement.  “Once these facilities have been addressed and we’ve completed our initial damage assessment, field assignments will be prioritized in a fashion that restores service to the greatest number of customers at one time. Consideration will also be given to customers who have been out of service the longest.  Given the scope and magnitude of the damage we’re seeing thus far, we fully anticipate restoration activities to extend deep into next week.”

Residents are asked to conserve water as much as possible as the system is taxed and as it will take some time once commercial power is restored to return the system back to normal.

The National Weather Service is predicting another line of thunderstorms to impact the state Saturday evening.

Gov. Martin O'Malley announced that he intends to Saturday evening. Governors in Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia have already made similar declarations in their respective states.

With temperatures expected to reach near 100 degrees and the possibility of power restoration to take several days it is important for those without air conditioning to remain cool and hydrated. Carroll County is opening cooling centers during business hours throughout the weekend.
