Unemployment in Carroll County Rises for First time in 2013

This month marks an end to the year's trend of lower unemployment numbers.

Unemployment rates for May 2013 released recently rank Carroll County third in Maryland for the lowest percentage of unemployed residents for the month according to the county's department of Economic Development. 

But for the first time in 2013, the monthly unemployment rate has increased. 

Of Carroll County residents, 5.8 percent were unemployed in May, up slightly from 5.4 percent in April but better than the 6.8 percent of unemployed the County had in March.

In March of 2012, Carroll County’s unemployment rate was 6.2 percent.

For the month of May, just two counties have unemployment rates lower than Carroll’s – Montgomery at 5.4 percent and Howard at 5.3 percent.

May was the first month in which the  unemployment rate has not been less than the previous month—Carroll County started the year with a 6.8 percent unemployment rate.

Carroll County’s year-to-date unemployment rate averages 6.1 percent.
