The Transformation of Union Bridge
Tidewater Portland Cement Co., the predecessor of Lehigh Cement, began construction of a cement plant in Union Bridge in 1909. The huge social and environmental changes the town experienced between 1909 and 1920 were similar to those of other towns and cities entering the industrial age across America. Mimi Ashcraft traces those first tumultuous years of the company’s existence based on information from the town’s newspaper and census records.
