World Wise Documentary Series: "Stealing A Nation"

Post-Screening Discussion with David Vine, associate professor of
anthropology at American University and author of ‘Island of Shame: The Secret
History of the U.S. Military Base on Diego Garcia’

A 2004 Granada Television documentary about the
plight of the people of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, whose
indigenous population was secretly and brutally expelled by British governments
in the late 1960s and 1970s to Mauritius, 1,000 miles away, in order to make
way for an American military base. The base, on the main island of Diego
Garcia, was a launch pad for the invasions in Afghanistan and Iraq. The film
was written and directed by John Pilger, and produced and directed by
Christopher Martin, with reconstruction footage directed by Sean Crotty. In
English. (2004, 56 minutes)
