Blog: HSP Gives a Big Shout Out to Winters Mill High School

Winters Mill High School students rallied to help collect much needed items for HSP (Human Service Programs).

We hear so many times the negative actions of teenagers and youth; so it goes without saying that teenage philanthropy should be raised up to a place of recognition. So here it goes--one big "shout out" to those falcons at Winters Mill High School!!

For nearly three weeks, all classes participated in an items drive to benefit Carroll County shelters managed by HSP. That's right, these young people took it upon themselves to learn about the shelters and commit to collect four specific items that are always used in mass quantity.

The original idea was floated by Winters Mill teacher/coach Dave Herman. Herman is no stranger to helping those less fortunate in the community. For many years, he has worked side by side with his varsity basketball players to help others through winter coat collections and food donations.

This year, Herman was looking for a school wide campaign and he found a winner. Herman worked with HSP to identify four specific items that are most utilized in the shelters.

The items; toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand soap and paper towels were gathered and brought to a collection point in the school. Once the drive ended, they were passed on to HSP last week. The items are now being separated and prepared for distribution to shelter clients in need.

The end result has been inspiring! The high school students and their administration got behind the idea and did a phenomenol job. It's so refreshing to to see young people take an interest in their community and be willing to step outside of themselves to help others.

So to Winters Mill High School -- ONE BIG SHOUT OUT!!

Thanks for all your hard work!!
