What HSP Can Do for You: David’s Story

David Bowman wasn’t a case of anything unusual from what the HSP agency normally sees. HSP helps those who are facing eviction, homelessness, electric turn off and any number of emergencies that pose a threat to loss of housing. For the past twenty years, David has cycled in and out of jail, shelters and living on the streets. Over the years David faced many obstacles in his life. He dealt with addictions, mental health issues and a ruptured aneurysm in his head. These issues made it so he wasn’t able to maintain income or housing and he had to learn to cope with the physical affects the aneurysm had caused. Finally back in November of 2012, David came to the Cold Weather Shelter. After only two weeks he was then placed in the Men’s Shelter. There he attended addiction meetings everyday as well as mental health counseling. He ended up doing so well that they offered him the position of volunteer resident assistant. After all these years, David finally moved into HSP Permanent Housing. For the first time in twenty years he has sobriety, income, housing and has reached self-sufficiency. In addition, he was happily married this past December and continues to make forward progress. HSP hopes to make more stories like David’s a reality.
