Blog: Choosing Memories over Materials

This Patch blogger wants to give her family good memories rather than "things" this holiday season. See her recommendations for fun places to visit.

On your mark, get set, GO! The race to Christmas is off and running. I feel like the turkey wasn’t even taken off the table on Thanksgiving Day and sales flyers were dropped in our laps and off we ran to get the best deals. With today’s economy, it is hard to not get caught up in the best sales to save a buck. I love this time of year but also can’t stand the rush that everyone is in to get the perfect gifts and the nastiness that consumes people in their quest to get everything done before the holidays.

This year I am removing myself from the madness at the malls. Yes, I will order a few gifts online for family and friends but I refuse to spend this special time of year in the hustle and bustle of the retail world. I want to enjoy every minute with my family doing things together this holiday season. Growing up we had a lot of family traditions and as my family grows these traditions mean more to me more than ever. Christmas Eve has always been spent at my Grandmother’s farm in rural Pennsylvania. We enjoy a gift exchange with family followed by a ham and kielbasa dinner.  The menu still remains the same today as well as still being at the kids table (which has grown over the years to include my kids). It is these kinds of traditions and special memories that I want my children to cherish over the years.

With this in mind I am going to make a great effort in providing special experiences that my family will take on as tradition and memories that will last their lifetime. Perhaps we will go experience the North Pole Express on the Western Maryland Railroad and take a train ride to see Santa.  Maybe spend the day at Hershey Park’s Candy Lane and experience the 2 million twinkling lights and rides for the kids. In the years to come, will my daughter remember the Holiday Barbie that she wants this year? Probably not, but will she remember the experience of riding a steam train to the “North Pole” to see Santa? Now that is a memory to last a lifetime.
