Today is May 1. For the moms, that means just 12 short days until that amazing day…where laundry can wait, beds remain unmade and pampering is queen…yes, I am talking about Mother’s Day. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a National Mother’s Day back in 1914, and since then moms everywhere have rejoiced in anticipation of homemade cards, sloppy kisses and great wishes for a wonderful, relaxing day.
Now if you are of the male variety, allow me to remind you that this is an important day. But you need not spend a fortune to show the loving mother of your children how much you care! Just take a walk down Main Street to find that perfect gift and make her day truly special. And in case you need some help, here are some ideas.
Did you know that more flowers are sold on Mother’s Day than on Valentine’s Day? The tradition of giving flowers in a mother’s honor began in 1908, when an appreciative daughter in West Virginia wore a carnation in homage of her mother. Now through Mother's Day, is offering 20% off all orders $50 or more (wire orders excluded), and $3 off all Yankee candles.

Does she have a green thumb? Make it even easier on yourself this year by having her select her own flower or plant on Saturday May 12, where Main Street will be alive with vendors, music and flowers at this fun and flowerful festival. Learn even more about this festival in next week’s blog!
Fix a Feast of Breakfast in Bed!
What is more relaxing for your mom than a scrumptious breakfast in bed? Set your alarm, and beat Mom to the kitchen! You can prepare all of her favorites, and take on her role as short-order cook. If cooking isn’t your thing, stop by , or any of the yummy restaurants on Main Street to bring Mom a delectable treat! Just remember to clean the kitchen when you’re done. Of course, you can also take her to brunch, lunch or dinner on this holiday at one of the amazing restaurants downtown.
Give the gift of sparkle! Jewelry is always a hit for any occasion, especially Mother’s Day! Mom will love a sparkly token of your appreciation, or a funky necklace in spring’s trendiest colors. Most of the shops downtown will help you select and even wrap that special gift!
Give her a chance to relax.
With all of those errands, carpools, loads of laundry and scheduling issues, Mom never has a chance to just relax. Consider making her a coupon book, good for having the laundry or dinner made or to have a girl’s night out. You could also provide a gift certificate for a day of beauty at Bladerunner or an afternoon of pottery painting at . She’ll be less stressed—and so will you!
Give the gift that continues to give.
Make a donation to one of the many local charities in our community that supports families and children. The is right downtown, and it provides outstanding arts and cultural programming throughout the year. Family membership are affordable and fun!
Whether you give a gift that is fun and whimsical or pretty and practical, remember one thing -- remember her day!!
We'll see you shopping (for Mother's Day!) around downtown!
