Blog: The Return of First Thursdays - Shop, Eat, Enjoy Late!

First Thursdays are Back! Shop, Eat and Experience Downtown, with shops open until 8 or later!

Looking for a fun way to jump start the weekend a day early this week?  Downtown Westminster has the answer!  On the first Thursday of each month, Downtown will come alive with music, shopping, activities and more.  The festivities begin this Thursday, where many shops will be open until 8 or later – and offer special events and offerings to help bring people downtown.

On June 7, this First Thursday will also host the first weekly “Songs at 6:30 Series”, where live music will be played each Thursday beginning at 6:30 on the Westminster Library lawn. This week, the free concert features When Thunder Comes, a band that describes itself as “indie/psychedelic/rock”, and its offerings are definitely gearing toward the modern side. The band’s beat will surely move you along to all of your shopping and eating destinations this First Thursday!

If “First Thursdays” sounds familiar, it is because it is something that was done a few years back (also called “Ladies Night Out”) but somehow fell by the wayside.  “We are so excited to see First Thursday start up again,” exclaims Lynn Aaron, owner of The Olde Liberty Shoppe. “We are looking forward to seeing many of our old friends back again!”

The Olde Liberty Shoppe is just one of a number of downtown stores offering something special for the evening.  “We will be featuring 15 to 20% off on women’s clothing, whether it’s a great shirt from our favorite Whitewash line or a skirt from Sugar lips,” says Aaron.  In addition, Aaron will be offering 15% off all scarves from 5 to 8pm, and will also be providing samples of its new cookies
and popcorn.

The Hickory Stick is offering a fun Vera Bradley gift with any Vera purchase of more than $50 that evening, and Sidetracked is kicking off its Spring Sale with many items 50% off.

Clementine’s is hosting its “Lemons and Leftovers” event, which begins on Thursday and will continue through the weekend.  The event features killer deals on many items throughout the store.  In keeping with the theme, Clementine’s will also offer lemon refreshments.

Paradiso wants people to shop and eat downtown, so it is offering 20% off meals that night at both the Ristorante and the Pizzeria.  To take advantage of this offer, simply present a receipt from a downtown store from that evening.  A great evening plan would be grab some friends and shop, then grab a Paradiso pizza, and have a wonderful Italian picnic on the library lawn while listening to the fun music of When Thunder Comes.

If you’re looking for something other than Italian food, perhaps the Cup will be more your, well, Cup of tea.  The tea bar and cafe is offering a Progressive Tea and Food Pairing on First Thursday, beginning at 6:30.  Lisa Simon, owner of Whirled Peas, is a personal chef and health supportive culinary educator, and is working with Cup owner Lora Andrews to offer a four course food and tea pairing. The tasting menu begins with an artisanal cheese flight, ranging from mild to strong cheeses, with 3 teas paired with each. The cheese course is followed by chilled minted pea soup accompanied by a microgreens salad. The third course offers crostini with meatballs or kale and cannellini beans, and dessert will be a fresh fruit chocolate fondue with coconut macaroons. “The menu is intended to be a tasting, so people can freely mingle and move around while enjoying the delicious food and tea,” says Andrews.   Tickets are $25 per person, and door prizes include $50 off any Whirled Peas and free tea for a month.   Space
is limited but still available. Call Cup at 410-848-7622 to reserve your space.

Look for the “First Thursdays” placards in the windows of participating shops and
restaurants downtown. And we’ll see you around downtown – on Thursday night!

This is such a fantastic idea! I'm really looking forward to it - especially if this weather holds!
