Resolve to Shop Local for the New Year

In 2013, resolve to shop local. And with the offerings in Downtown Westminster, it's easy!

The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions began nearly 4000 years ago in ancient Babylon, where the most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment -- known today as returning your neighbor’s tools.

It’s the first full week of the New Year.  How are you doing with your resolutions? If you are in need of inspiration, how about resolving to Shop Local in 2013? Thanks to Downtown Westminster, it's a resolution that's easy to keep!

Resolve to try a new local restaurant in 2013. The new Sideways Café on E. Main Street replaces the former Taste of Tuscany and just opened in December.  It’s a great spot to meet friends for a yummy panini or after work cocktail.  The atmosphere is chic and cozy, and the food is terrific.

Now that your Christmas decorations are stashed away until next year, resolve to shop local for Valentine’s Day!  Downtown Westminster is a terrific place to find that perfect bauble.  You can build a personalized and beautiful bracelet at Artworks & Apparel Boutique, Hickory Stick or Olde Liberty Shoppe.  If a ring or necklace is what you have in mind, visit Pomeroy Jewelers or AMR Jewelry and select a jewel that is as special as your sweetheart.

Cold nights just beg for a warm, comfortable meal – an easy excuse to keep that local resolution.  Sit by the inviting fire at O’Lordan’s Irish Pub and partake in some soulful Irish food, or stop by Guilianova’s Italian Deli to grab some homemade pasta, sauce and meatballs for a romantic evening by your own fire.

If local entertainment is what you’re looking for, check out the Arts Center calendar of events.  Cup, Maggie’s, Birdie’s and other restaurants also offer live music on an ongoing basis.  But if making music is more your thing, visit Coffey Music and learn how to jam.

Since exercise tends to be the leading resolution, it’s easy to combine fitness and buying local downtown. The Westminster Family Fitness Center on Longwell Avenue offers plentiful classes, equipment and weights to get you started (or keep you going).  Crossfit Retribution on John Street provides a unique approach to getting fit and healthy in a personalized way.

Resolve to Shop Local at least once per week -- you’ll find it’s a resolution that is easy to keep!
