Meet Bart and Eddie, two adorable, sweet Poodle-mix pups who are a little over a year old and weigh about 15 pounds. Bart and Eddie are brothers and best buds who complement each other and have been a source of security in each other’s lives. Bart is more energetic and inquisitive, and always wants to be by your side. Eddie is more reserved and calm, but has a sense of independence about him. Both are very sweet, gentle souls in search of love and security.
Bart and Eddie were rescued as part of a cruelty and neglect case, and were taken in by Animal Control when their owner was incarcerated. They were living in a small, run-down hotel room and were being used for breeding by their owner, who would sell their puppies. They were kept crated all day long, and were so unkempt and matted that they had to be shaved down when they came into the rescue, and their coats are still growing in.
Understandably, both Bart and Eddie were frightened and unsure when we first met them, as they had very little outside socialization, spending most and maybe all of their lives confined in a crate. Luckily, they landed in the home of one of our veteran foster moms, Lisa, and within days started to gain trust and come out of their shell. Lisa has fostered many of our more fearful and anxious pups, and knows how to introduce them to the world and help them transition into home life. She takes them everywhere with her, from PetSmart to adoption events, and even into work some days, and the dogs really benefit from the positive experiences this exposure provides.
When I arrived to do their photo shoot, both Bart and Eddie were a little standoffish with me at first. Bart barked a few times just to let me know he was there, while Eddie stood behind him silently, but cautiously curious. I sat down on the floor near them to let them smell me, gave them a few treats, and within minutes they had let down their guard and accepted me in their home. Then we all went for a walk to take some pictures, and I was amazed at how well they walked on leash and greeted other dogs and their neighbors. They were more nervous around men, but that’s not uncommon with rescue dogs, especially if they’ve had negative experiences with men in their previous home. It’s clear that they are both resilient pups who are able to leave their past behind and settle in to home life, comforting and supporting each other in this new adventure.
Bart and Eddie both have a sweet and social nature, and just need to find a stable, loving home to fully blossom. We would love to see them adopted together, but it’s not a requirement. We do think they both need to be in a home with another dog who can help them adjust, build their confidence, and be their canine companion. They also need a calmer, quiet home environment and should not be placed with small children. Mostly, they need a patient, loving family who will give them some time to settle in, and will make them a special part of their lives.
BART (All White Poodle-mix) – Bart is the more energetic and adventurous of the two pups, but also very snuggly and loves to give kisses. His foster mom calls him the “glue dog” because he follows her around everywhere and wants to be by her side. He craves attention and bonds quickly to anyone who holds and pets him. He loves to play fetch and carries his squeaky alligator toy around with him everywhere – he even tries to take it out on walks with him. It may be the first toy he’s ever had, and he is attached to it.
EDDIE (Tan & White Poodle-mix) – Eddie is a little more laid back and reserved, but also more independent. He likes to curl up next to his foster mom on the couch, but will also leave her side to enjoy the soft, cushy comfort of his dog bed. He’s playful, loves food and squeaky toys, and is very sweet. He comes across as the more mature older brother, but still follows Bart everywhere and is a little more cautious around new people.
