Blog: Missing Those Silly Love Songs

Variety is the spice of life. What about those songs we don't listen to anymore?

The picture attached with this article is a perfect example of that beautiful image in so many people's minds on what love should be like. Of course, it's my job to write about music, and the image isn't showing the ipod that they plugged into the car stereo. It's playing something nice, right? Some classical music? Elton John? The Beatles?

Bad news. For some reason, we're losing our silly love songs. Oh, some songs keep being written, but more often than not we're hearing party songs or songs about break-ups. As a kid, I was never a huge fan of love songs. I mean, girls were yucky, what mattered was legos and going outside to play. I still heard those songs all the time though, because my mommy made me. I could have some resentment, some mother issues now that I'm older, but actually, I'm really glad she did. Those songs were worth hearing. They still are.

We get caught up in our lives from time to time, and it's nice to listen to something that's so different. Don't misunderstand, there's always something funny about a party song, talking about the stupid things kids and college students do, but what about a song that focuses on the first kiss? Or prom? There's a part of me going "yuck" as I write this, but variety is the spice of life. The current top 10 songs in the U.S. are as follows:

As you can see, we're not getting a lot of "Love" songs. Not that these are bad songs. But I need a little bit more of that "two little kids eating icecream at the beach, years later high school sweethearts, live happily ever after" flavor. Don't you?
