Cardiovascular Disease~Are We Getting It All Wrong?

The Facts…..

  • 50% of heart attacks & strokes occur in people with normal cholesterol.
  • Cholesterol is not the primary cause of heart disease.
  • Not all LDL cholesterol is bad.
  • Not all HDL cholesterol is good.
  • Consuming a diet high in cholesterol or eggs does not raise blood cholesterol for most people
  • BP (blood pressure) readings in your health care provider’s office may not be the most accurate measure of BP.
  • Fasting glucose of 99, which is noted to be “normal”, is not normal or safe.
  • Normal weight does not ensure protection from heart disease.
  • Mark C. Houston, MD, MS ~ Integrative Cardiologist Saint Thomas Medical Group

CVD does not come from cholesterol ~ it comes from inflammation, oxidative stress and autoimmune damage to your arteries.

There’s no doubt about it, inflammation is key contributor to heart disease. A major study done at Harvard found that people with high levels of a marker called C-reactive protein (CRP) had higher risks of heart disease than people with high cholesterol. Normal cholesterol levels were NOT protective to those with high CRP. The risks were greatest for those with high levels of both CRP and cholesterol.  Mark Hyman, MD

Cardiovascular disease results from an imbalance in bodily functions leading to inflammation, imbalances in blood sugar and insulin and oxidative stress.  Our current model of managing CV risk is to prescribe medications, which treat the symptoms of the disease, rather than the root cause.    We are overlooking the fact that  CV risk is related to the interaction between a variety of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors.  In particular, inflammation can be fueled by a poor diet, an inactive lifestyle, food allergies or sensitivities, emotional stress, autoimmune disease, hidden infections, periodontal or gum disease and environmental toxins such as mercury.
