Pennsylvania Man Charged in Union Bridge Armed Robbery

A Pennsylvania man has been arrested on a string of charges related to a June armed robbery of a Main Street 7-Eleven store.

A 26-year-old Pennsylvania man has been charged in connection with a June armed robbery of a Union Bridge 7-Eleven store.

According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department, sheriff’s deputies charged Michael Joseph Springer of the 1200 block of Loop Road, Fayettesville, PA, Tuesday night for the June armed robbery of the 7-Eleven store located on the 100 block of Main Street.

According to the department's Aug. 9 press release, Springer faces a string of charges, including armed robbery, robbery, use of a handgun to commit a felony, two counts of theft of less than $1,000, forgery of issuing a false check, fleeing and eluding a police vehicle and resisting arrest.

The release states that the robbery took place at approximately 2:20 a.m. on June 14, 2011. At that time, Carroll County sheriff’s deputies responded to a hold-up alarm at the convenience store.

The release states that the initial investigation revealed that prior to the alarm, a white male--approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a black hoodie, white mask and black gloves--entered the store displaying a handgun and demanded money from the cashier.

While no one was injured during the robbery, the suspect fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, the release stated.

According to the release, acting on a tip from residents, sheriff’s deputies located Springer in the unit block of Broad Street in Taneytown.

In addition, Sheriff’s Department spokesman Major Phil Kasten said investigators used a composite sketch, tips and information received from residents and area businesses in identifying Springer as a suspect.

After a brief struggle, Springer was arrested and transported to Carroll County Central Booking where he is awaiting a bail review related to both the robbery and unrelated charges from a June 16  check fraud incident.

According to Kasten, Springer is also facing extradition; a detainer has been issued for Springer from the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole, which relates to a probation violation in that state.

Kasten also called Springer, “a person of interest in other crimes in Frederick County.”

In the meantime, the investigation into the 7-Eleven robbery is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact Detective Corporal Doug Epperson at 410-386-2574, or the toll free anonymous TIPS Hotline at 1-888-399-TIPP (8477).
