Feds Charge Westminster Man with Possessing Child Pornography

Scott Wade Markle has been charged with one count of possessing child pornography.

A Westminster man who served a year in prison in 2005 for possessing child pornography has been charged once again, according to online federal court documents.

A federal grand jury indicted Scott Wade Markle, 51, of Westminster on one count of possession of child pornography on Feb. 22.

According to the indictment, Markle possessed and accessed child pornography from "in or about Sept. 2008 and continuing until on or about Feb. 11, 2013."

Markle, who has been active with the Carroll County Democratic Central Committee, pleaded guilty to one count of possessing visual depictions of minors engaging in sexual conduct in 2005 according to an article in the Carroll County Times.

He served one year and one day in prison and was listed in the sex offender registry as a result of the 2005 conviction according to the Times article.

According to the Department of Justice, if convicted of this current charge, Markle faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, followed by supervised release of up to life.

Markle's arraignment is scheduled for March 1 in Baltimore.

Child abuse is something that should not be tolerated. If Mr. Markie is set free, he should be wearing an ankle bracelet and have a restrictive order not to be around children. This seems to be a disease of the mind that we have not yet found a cure for. Rehabilitation does not seem to work and only restraints which can be enforced or incarceration seems to be the only way to protect our youth.

The crap of giving people a slap on the wrist (1 year sentence) the first time for a serious offense, especially when it's something like this where the chance of a repeat offense is high, is ridiculous. You know there's more to this than just pictures. This is just the only thing he's been caught for doing. Unfortunately, I actually knew this man and no too much about this whole story. I'm extremely disappointed with the justice here.

As a parent and former educator, I feel repulsed yet pitying. I understand Mr. Markle was abused as a child, but the cycle cannot be allowed to continue with other children. God, 10 years maximum. He's a talented man--what a waste. Family and friends stood by him, hoping he could beat the odds on the high rate of recidivism. May they heal quickly, and may he (and so many others like him) get the help they need.
