Manchester Valley Teacher Dies in Morning Collision with School Bus

Devin Spence, a first-year math teacher at Manchester Valley High School, died Monday morning after his car collided with a private school bus on Sullivan Road.

Icy road conditions are believed to have contributed to the collision, according to investigators.

According to police, Spence's car, a 2001 Ford Focus, was traveling north along Sullivan Road entering a sharp turn in the 1700 block when it slid across the center line, spinning sideways before striking an oncoming school bus that was entering the turn southbound. 

After striking the bus, the Ford Focus burst into flames as it spun southbound back across the roadway, coming to rest against the northbound shoulder, police said.  

The driver of the Ford Focus, Devin Michael Spence, 24, of Westminster, was pronounced dead on the scene by first responders. 

Spence was on his way to Manchester Valley High School where he’s taught Mathematics since January of 2012. School officials have made additional counselors available for students and staff. The bus was taking five students to Delone Catholic High School in Pennsylvania, according to police; no students were injured during the collision. 

Sullivan Road was closed for most of the morning for investigation and clean-up. Traffic Collision Reconstructionists from the Sheriff's Office are conducting a detailed investigation of the accident, which could take several weeks.
