Police Investigate Shooting in Charles Street Apartment Building (Update 5/12)

Police identify the victim and suspect in the Tuesday morning shooting.

Westminster police charged Montrell Troy Schumpert, 21, with attempted second degree murder, first degree assault, reckless endangerment and use of a handgun in the commission of a felony, according to a news release. 

Schumpert was arrested in Baltimore City on unrelated charges Tuesday afternoon. He is being brought to Carroll County where he will be formally charged and taken before a Commissioner for a bail review, according to a news release.

The victim in the shooting as been identified as Tony Boyd Jr., 27, a news release reports. According to the news release, Boyd has addresses in both Baltimore and Philadelphia Pa.

Mr. Boyd remains at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma. His condition has been upgraded from critical to stable following surgery for the single gunshot wound to his abdominal area, the news release reported.

The Criminal Investigations Bureau of the Westminster Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred at approximately 12:20 a.m. early Wednesday morning, in the hallway of an apartment building located at 100 Charles St, according to a news release.

The news release reports that calls to 911 initially indicated a disturbance with possible shots being fired, subsequent calls were from residents reporting a man had been shot and was in the hallway of the apartment building.

Responding EMS and police units found a 27 year old man suffering from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to the news release.  The victim was transported to University of  Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore and is currently in surgery, his identity is being withheld until next of kin are notified.  The victim is expected to survive his injuries, police report in the news release.
