This story has been updated with additional information reported by police and the woman's name has been updated throughout.

A Hampstead woman armed with a gun and threatening suicide was shot and killed by a trooper after she refused to surrender the gun and continued to point the gun at officers, Maryland State Police reported Tuesday.

The woman has been identified as Satina D. White, 40, who was living with her sister and her sister's teenaged daughter. The trooper involved in the shooting is identified as John Warchal, a road patrol trooper assigned to the Westminster barrack. Warchal is a three-year veteran of the Maryland State Police.

White’s sister called 911 shortly before 6 p.m. Monday and requested police assistance for a domestic dispute involving White, whom she said had been drinking and was threatening suicide, a news release reported. According to the news release, the caller said she did not feel safe with White in her home. White's sister later told investigators that she and her sister had argued Sunday evening and again Monday. White's sister told White she would have to leave the residence and could no longer live there, according to the news release.

Before troopers arrived at the scene, another call came in reporting that White was armed with a gun and was threatening suicide, according to a news release. White's sister said she and her teenaged daughter had locked themselves in an upstairs bathroom, according to the news release.

According to police reports, White appeared at upstairs and downstairs windows repeatedly, pointing the gun at the two state troopers, a Hampstead police officer and Carroll County Sheriff's Deputy who had arrived on the scene.

White refused repeated commands to drop the weapon and, according to the press release, repeatedly pointed the gun at Warchal. Warchal fired his service weapon, wounding White. She was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators said they believed White obtained the .45-caliber pistol from the pickup truck of her sister's boyfriend. He was not in the home at the time. The scene was searched and processed after investigators obtained a search warrant.

Warchal has been placed on administrative leave, according to police reports, which police said is routine while a police-involved shooting is being investigated.
