Sykesville Police Host Second Annual 'Safe House' Gun Drop Off

Police encourage citizens to make homes safe over the holidays.

The Sykesville Police Department will host its second annual 'Safe House' Gun Drop off this Saturday, Nov. 17 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Police are encouraging residents to drop off unwanted firearms and ammunition.

According to a news release, the drop off site will be manned, but no questions will be asked of persons dropping items off.  Receipts are available for those who request them.

Police warn do NOT bring any loaded weapons to the drop-off point, if help is needed to make sure a firearm is safe, call the police department and someone will come out to help.

Last year’s program was very successful, most of the ammunition and weapons turned in were in poor condition and would probably be dangerous to use according to a news release.

Westminster Police Chief Jeffrey Spaulding said that the Westminster police department does not currently offer a gun drop off program.

The Sykesville Police will also have a limited number of gun locks to give away that Saturday.

Any questions can be directed to Cpl. Dave Lewis, Sykesville Police Dept. at 410-795-0757.
