10 Years After Start of Iraq War, Maryland Still Feels Effects of Casualties

77 military personnel from Maryland have died since 2003, three of them from Carroll County.

Since the invasion of Iraq on March 19, 2003, 77 members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard and Reserves from the state of Maryland have died, according to a database managed by the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count.

Just two days following the invasion, Staff Sgt. Kendall Damon Waters-Bey, of Baltimore, became the first casualty from Maryland, dying in a helicopter crash on March 21, 2003. According to the database, Sgt. John F. Burner III, also of Baltimore, perished from a pulmonary embolis on Sept. 16, 2012, marking the 77th entry in the chart.

The website lists a total of 4,804 fatalities, with California (476), Texas (420), Florida (196), Pennsylvania (196) and Ohio (188) having the highest counts.
