Carroll County Delegate Checks in from Republican National Convention

Larry Helminiak will keep Patch posted from the Republican National Convention in Tampa this week.

Sykesville resident Larry Helminiak is patiently waiting for Isaac to do its business so that he can get on with the business of being at the Republican National Convention in Tampa this week.

Helminiak is the Chair of the Carroll County Republican Central Committee. He said he has been a GOP delegate since 2003 and has gone to one national convention, in 2008 in Minnesota.

Helminiak said that at this year's convention, he's looking for "unity".

"For years polls show conservatives self-identifying at 40 percent while liberals self-identify at 20 percent. Many campaigns try to attract the middle by modifying their conservatism," Helminiak said. "This year they are professing their conservatism (compared to Democrats) and inviting the middle to come along."

Stay tuned, Helminiak will be updating Patch from the convention in Tampa.

Here are the first two updates from Helminiak:

Sunday, Aug. 26 8:45 a.m.

Helminiak: "As of Sunday morning, everything is on hold. Most attendees planned to come in on Sunday. Because of the hurricane forecasts,  we understand that airlines are cancelling flights after noon. On Monday, the convention will be gaveled in, as scheduled, then immediately gaveled out. As of now it starts on Tuesday. Pamphlets are being handed out warning about protesters; but 40 mph winds and rain may put a damper on them.  The overwhelming feeling here is that this is our time.  We expect to win in November."

Sunday, Aug. 26 5:25 p.m.

Helminiak: "I took a trip to Ybor City.  A caravan of 5 cars were driving up and down the main street with cages attached to the roofs. They all contained stuffed dogs. I assumed they considered this a knock on Mitt Romney. Interesting: 1. The deficit is nearing $ 16 trillion, 2. Fewer Americans are working today than when Obama took office. And the best the opposition has is riding around in caravans on a Sunday afternoon with fake dogs on top.  I think we’re winning."
