Carroll County Veterans Day Activities, Ceremony

Westminster's annual Veterans Day ceremony will be held at City Hall Sunday at 4 p.m.

Veterans Day is this Sunday, Nov. 11 and there are a lot of activities to honor our local veterans taking place across the county.

Annual Veterans Day Ceremony in Westminster

The annual Veteran’s Day Ceremony will be held on Sunday, November 11 at 4 p.m. at Westminster City Hall, 1838 Emerald Hill Lane. The event is hosted by Carroll Post #31 American Legion honoring Veterans of past and present. The ceremony is open to the public. Century High School Veterans Day Assembly

Century High School will hold its annual Veterans Day assembly on Friday, Nov. 9, to pay tribute to veterans for their military service while also helping students recognize the importance of service to others. The day will begin at 8 a.m. with a breakfast for veterans, family members, and distinguished guests. The assembly will be held from 9:05 to 10:45 a.m.

The program will begin with veterans and distinguished guests processing into the gymnasium. The guest speaker will be Colonel Ed Rothstein, Garrison Commander of Fort Meade, Maryland. There also will be performances by students and special musical guests the US Coast Guard Glee Club. Following the assembly, all veterans are invited to share memorabilia, pictures, and stories from their experiences with students and guests in a Living History Museum. Century’s JROTC Cadets, video production, and newspaper classes will be filming a documentary of the day’s events.

Manchester Valley High School Veterans Dinner and Show

The Manchester Valley High School Class of 2013 and the Fine Arts Department, with the help of many other school organizations, will host a dinner and show for veterans and their spouses on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m.

Students have been asked to invite their parents, grandparents, and other family members who have served in the armed forces to be their guests for
this evening of food and entertainment. Admission is free for veterans and spouses. All veterans in the community are invited to attend.

Mechanicsville Elementary School Operation Welcome Home Maryland

Mechanicsville Elementary School will be supporting Operation Welcome Home Maryland. Participating classes will be making cards for the returning soldiers. They also will be sponsoring a snack and water drive.

The school is accepting half-liter bottles of water and pre-wrapped, single serving bags of snacks, chips, and candy through Friday, Nov. 16. Operation Welcome Home Maryland is an organization that greets hundreds of returning soldiers, airmen, soldiers, and Marines every week as they come through the gates of BWI Airport. These “goodie bags” are a welcome treat for the arriving troops, especially since most of them are not local and will be waiting for a connecting flight home.

New Windsor Middle School Slide Show

New Windsor Middle School will honor veterans associated with the school with stars for service members and veterans, as well as showcasing them in a slide show to be shown to students.

North Carroll High School Annual Veterans Day Program

North Carroll High School will hold its annual Veterans Day program on Monday, Nov. 12, beginning with breakfast at 8 a.m. in the school cafeteria. The breakfast will be followed by a program at 9 a.m. Attendees are asked to pre-register by emailing kkstem@carrollk12.org or calling the school at

North Carroll Middle School First Annual Veterans Day Program

North Carroll Middle School will hold its first annual Veterans Day program on Friday, Nov. 9 beginning with breakfast at 8 a.m. in the school cafeteria. The breakfast will be followed by having veterans tour the school, judge homeroom posters, and speak to various social studies classes. Attendees are asked to pre-register by emailing jtgreen@carrollk12.org or calling the school at 410-751-3440.

West Middle School Unveils "Freedom Shrine"

West Middle School will be unveiling a “Freedom Shrine” in celebration of Veterans Day. The shrine consists of an array of historical documents that changed the direction of United States history and was donated to West Middle School by The National Exchange Club. The purpose of this organization
is to strengthen citizen appreciation of our American Heritage.

The Freedom Shrine will be unveiled on Monday, Nov. 12. Prior to the unveiling, the school will broadcast a live student interview with a U.S. military veteran as well as show a PowerPoint honoring military personnel past and present.

Winters Mill High School 11th Annual Veterans Day Program

Winters Mill High School will host its 11th annual Veterans Day program on Friday, Nov. 9. Breakfast will start at 7:45 a.m., with an assembly to follow at 9 a.m. The theme for this year’s program is “Heroes of War.” The breakfast will be prepared by the Carroll County Career and Technology Center, as well as the Pro-Start program at Winters Mill. The Winters Mill JROTC, along with Winters Mill students, will greet the veterans and serve them their breakfast.

The assembly that will follow includes the Winters Mill Wind Ensemble, Select Chorus, Dance Team, JROTC, and several student speakers. All students will take part in an advisory lesson prior to the assembly. The Veterans Day Activities are planned by 5 independent study students at Winters Mill.
