Commissioners Host Forum on Proposed 'Second Amendment Preservation Resolution'

"... the Constitution will not enforce itself, so it's time for local officials to take a stand in defense of our freedoms." -- Commissioner Richard Rothschild

The Board of Carroll County Commissioners will host a public forum tonight, Wednesday, May 22, to explain the proposed Second Amendment Preservation Resolution and get citizen input.

“The Second Amendment is not ambiguous,” said Commissioner Richard Rothschild in a statement, “and the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. However, the Constitution will not enforce itself, so it’s time for local officials to take a stand in defense of our freedoms."

According to a news release, the board is taking a stand in defense of second amendment gun rights. In an open session meeting Tuesday, Commissioner Richard Rothschild said that all five commissioners support the resolution.

"Annapolis does this to us because we let them, and they will not stop until we demonstrate we will no longer tolerate the intolerable. The time to act is now," Rothschild said.

The forum will consist of all five county commissioners presenting information to put the proposed resolution in context, Rothschild said in open session Tuesday. There will also be guest speakers including a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Carroll County Sheriff Ken Tregoning and Carroll County State's Attorney Jerry Barnes.

The commissioners are not sure if they will vote on the proposed amendment following the forum, Rothschild said. Rothschild said they intend to feel out of the mood of the participants before determining if the momentum warrants taking the vote at the forum.

"Our citizens understand the constitution, and will not tolerate attacks on the second amendment by state government," Commissioner Robin Frazier said in a statement. "Lately, all of our constitutional rights are being infringed, and if we lose the second amendment, we are in danger of losing all of our rights."

The forum will be held Wednesday, May 22, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Carroll Community College in room K-100.

"As a strong supporter of the second amendment, I am determined to do everything I can as an elected official to protect our citizens’ rights," Commissioner Haven Shoemaker said in a statement. "I encourage all citizens who value their gun rights to attend this forum.”
