The Daily Record reports that former Carroll County prosecutor David Daggett is suing the Carroll County Times for $1 million, alleging it erroneously reported that he had falsely testified at a court hearing in a murder trial.
The testimony to which Daggett referred was given during a hearing for Cassandra Glover, charged along with her boyfriend, Russell Scott Laderer Jr., in the death of Jeremiah DeMario, 25, who was fatally stabbed in 2010 outside his Hampstead home.
Patch against Glover and Laderer on March 12 when State's Attorney Jerry Barnes accused the of botching the investigation.
According to the Daily Record, The Carroll County Times reported that Daggett testified he had not been called by the police after DeMario’s body was discovered Sept. 14, 2010. The Times reported that it secured phone records that showed Daggett did have a phone conversation with a sargeant at the scene the night of the killing.
In his lawsuit, Daggett said his testimony addressed not whether he spoke to a police investigator but if he had been asked questions by him.
Daggett claims in his lawsuit that he truthfully testified that he did not receive a call from a police officer with questions about the slaying, and he says he has suffered humiliation, depression and financial losses as a result of the news report, according to the Daily Record.
Barnes told Patch in an email he could not comment on the story.
