Speak Out: County Commissioner Accomplishments in 2012

What do you believe were the most important decisions made by the Carroll County Board of Commissioners in 2012?

The Carroll County Board of Commissioners is finishing up its second year in a four-year term. From an airport expansion to trash incinerators, school funding to the English language, 2012 proved to be a busy year for the five member board.

In the county's December newsletter, the commissioners listed their accomplishments for 2012 as the following:

  • Economic relief—streamlined development review process
  • Veterans Advisory Council and Veterans Shuttle
  • Private Non-Profit Workgroup formed to study best practices and improve system efficiencies
  • Celebrating America Summer Adventure Program successfully launched
  • Solid Waste Workgroup Report provides a plan to deal with a portion of the county’s municipal solid waste
  • Property tax reduction for the second year in a row
  • Excellent bond rating allowing the county to buy bonds at historically low rates and retire over $17 million of older, higher interest bonds
  • Fleet Study completed showing the county efficiently uses resources in managing its fleet services
  • Carroll County Regional Airport Master Plan Scope of Work authorized
  • Awarded grant to study the feasibility of a bike & pedestrian trail in the Eldersburg area
  • Creation of a best business practices program to review departmental goals and objectives and ensure cost efficient operations
  • County Mission Statement developed around which all government operations are aligned
  • Leader in the state to protect property rights of our citizens
  • Expansion of the Fallen Hero Tax Credit
  • Get Business Now Seminar—one of most successful seminars ever offered to Carroll’s business community
  • Creation of the Carroll Business Path—a collaboration to enhance entrepreneurship and business development in Carroll County
  • Sale of the Wheeler Building
