Beekeeping Class is the Latest Buzz at Carroll Community College

Local beekeeping association partners with Carroll Community College to provide education about beekeeping.

Carroll Community College will be hosting a short course in beekeeping. The course will cover getting started with bees; equipment and equipment assembly; honey bee biology; spring management and swarming; diseases; fall/winter management.

The course is offered in partnership with Carroll County Beekeepers Association. A one year membership in the Carroll County Beekeepers Association and a textbook are also included in the fee. The class is suitable for all family members above the age of 10. The cost is $45 per family.

The course will run on Wednesdays from March 23-April 13 from 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. and a final hands-on lab on April 16 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Hashawha Apiary.

The lab session will include a honey extraction demonstration; open hive observations; a swarm collecting demonstration; requeening instructions-introducing a new queen.

A course description for the class reminds us “beekeeping can be a profitable small business or a fascinating and environmentally sound hobby for the entire family, making gardens and fruit trees more productive.”
