The Technology & Engineering Educators Association of Maryland (TEEAM) announced the selection of Shiloh Middle School for the Middle School Program Excellence Award. This award is given to the middle school program in the state of Maryland that best demonstrates excellence in Technology Education.
The Shiloh Middle School technology education program is taught by Travis Blizzard. Over the past two years, Shiloh Middle School has piloted for Carroll County and been the lead resource for the implementation of the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association’s Engineering by Design middle school online assessments and curriculum, according to a CCPS news release.
Blizzard is leading a professional learning community on curriculum development and piloting the 7th grade Engineering by Design Invention and Innovation MRE curriculum. He has developed many design briefs integrating the engineering design process and inquiry based learning.
TEEAM also selected Charles Weaver, Jr. from Mt. Airy Middle School as the recipient of its Outstanding New Teacher Award - Middle School. This award is given to a new middle school technology education teacher in the state of Maryland that best demonstrates excellence in Technology Education.
Weaver has been teaching technology education at Mt. Airy Middle School for two years. During this time, he has contributed to curriculum development and is piloting the 7th grade Engineering by Design Invention and Innovation curriculum.
Weaver encourages all students to engage in the problem solving process in his Technology Education classes according to a news release. He continually challenges his students to improve and discover new and better solutions. His students are encouraged to use their resources and critical thinking before asking him for assistance. Weaver seeks the explanations from the students, not just an answer. He is the leader of a school club, the Drafting Bulldogs.
Working with members of the Carroll County Public Schools construction department and the construction management company, the Drafting Bulldogs are learning about the design and construction process.
