Five Young Robotic Teams Qualify for State Tournament

The elementary and middle school teams will compete at UMBC at the end of January.

Five teams of elementary and middle school students from Carroll County have shown what it takes in the world of robotics, advancing to a state tournament in the sport at UMBC. 

On Jan. 28 at UMBC, the teams of students in grades 4-8 will compete at the State FIRST Lego League Tournament. A total of 72 slots were available for more than 250 teams statewide.

The teams had to place in the top third of their respective qualifying events to get to Saturday's tournament.

The teams heading to the state competition are: 

  •  The Linton Springs Thinkin’ Robot Stars from in Sykesville. 
  • The Robot Alliance from in Eldersburg. 
  • Westminster Montessori, who qualified at the Roar of the Robots at Carroll Community College – a qualifier hosted by the Liberty Robo-Lions, a high school FIRST Robotics Team. 
  • The Silver Souls and the PIE-Rats, middle school aged students sponsored by the Partnership and Inspiration of Engineering Education and Entrepreneurship, a non-profit booster for the Robo-Lions.
