Francis Scott Key's Hyson Inducted into Maryland State Wrestling Hall of Fame

Bill Hyson has been the head wrestling coach at Francis Scott Key High School for 34 years.

Bill Hyson, wrestling coach and physical education teacher at Francis Scott Key High School, has been inducted into the Maryland State Wrestling Hall of Fame, according to a Carroll County Board of Education news release.

Hyson is a 1973 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School where he was a three sport athlete, participating on the football, baseball, and wrestling teams. He then attended Frostburg State College where he lettered in football and wrestling.

Hyson has been the head wrestling coach at his high school alma mater for the past 34 years, establishing the program’s reputation within the state’s wrestling community. Throughout his tenure, Hyson’s teams at Francis Scott Key High School have posted winning records in 30 seasons, crowned 12 individual state champions, and included over 80 state place winners. The school also has enjoyed numerous top five finishes at the state tournament.

In addition to teaching the fundamentals of wrestling, Hyson places an even greater focus on work ethic, perseverance, teamwork, and being a good person, according to the release. He facilitates the success of his wrestlers not only on the mat, but also within the school and the community.
