Friendship Valley Students Turn Trash into Art

Elementary students from Friendship Valley have merged science and math with art and recycling.

Friendship Valley Elementary School students created a painted plywood and bottle cap mural to support the school-wide initiative to become a Green School.

In the fall, students, families and staff were asked to donate plastic bottle caps to art teacher Deb Welle, according to a news release. The mural's design was created by working with students in the school's Green Squad from February to March. Every student in the school added a cap to the mural, along with many staff members, adult volunteers and even visitors, the news release said. The mural will hang in the school's cafeteria.

In everyday art classes, students made connections between the mural and the art curriculum. Interdisciplinary connections were made in math and science as well, according to the news release.
