High School Sports Preview: Boys and Girls Track

Westminster and Winters Mill prepare for a grueling outdoor track season.

Girls Preview

Westminster is young and Winters Mill has some veterans as the girls track teams take off running.

Westminster Owls

Co-coaches Rob Johnson and Christine Johnson have a young team this Spring. Leading the Owls this season are Nkechi Mezu, Audrea Fernekees, Rebecca Baldwin and Natalie Eastwood.

Mezu, a senior is the defending county champion in the 100 meter dash. Baldwin is also a senior, while Fernekees is a junior and Eastwood, a sophomore.

Winters Mill Falcons

The Falcons were fifth in the county last year for coach Stan Jones.

One of the big scores for Winters Mill this season is junior Hannah Oneda. She had a very successful indoor season which backed up an excellent cross country season.

Joining her in the distance events will be Erica Diffendal and Nicole Rutherford.

Senior Carolyn Smith will be a force in the sprints and relays. Another senior, Cat Myers will score in field events.

 

Boys Preview

The Westminster boys track team welcomed new coach Rob Johnson this Spring while Winters Mill is under the guidance of veteran coach, Tom Fisher.

Westminster Owls

The Owls haven’t won a county team title since 2004 and Johnson hopes to reverse that trend.

Senior James Beacham returns along with junior Alex Cooke in the distance events. Justin Maize will complete in multiple events. Also back is senior Eric Belt, who won the county indoor title this year.

Winters Mill Falcons

Returning for his last season for the Falcons is Ryan Spangler. He had a successful indoor season for Winters Mill. Spangler will have aiistance in the distance events with Reilly Cox and Zach Hopkins.

Winters Mill was fifth in the county last year and 17 athletes return from that squad.
