School Notes: Board Meeting, Cavalier Classic, College and Career Night

Important Dates

  • Oct. 22 through Oct. 26: National School Bus Safety Week
  • Tuesday, Oct. 23: Bus Drivers and Bus Assistants Recognition Day
  • Wednesday, Oct. 24: Board of Education Meeting and Work Session (1 p.m.)
  • Thursday, Nov. 1: Marking period ends, two hour and forty-five minute early dismissal for students
  • Sunday, Nov. 4: Standard time begins at 2 a.m.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 6: Schools/Offices closed, General Election Day

Board Meeting Oct. 24

The Board of Education of Carroll County will hold an administrative meeting on Wednesday, October 24, at 1 p.m. in the Charles I. Ecker Boardroom at the Board of Education offices, located at 125 North Court Street in Westminster. There will be no time for citizen participation at this meeting. A work session on the future of Carroll County Public Schools will be held immediately following the Board meeting. The public is encouraged to attend.

Board of Education Candidate Forum at North Carroll High School

The North Carroll High School Political Science class is hosting a Board of Education Candidate Forum on Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the auditorium of North Carroll High School.  The forum is open to the public.  The forum will be moderated by political science students, and the questions were created by the students in the class.

Book in a Day Program at Westminster High School

Westminster High School is again hosting the Book-in-a-Day Program on Friday, Oct. 26.   Book-in-a-Day was established by Kwame Alexander, a renowned poet, children’s book author, playwright, producer, speaker, and performer. It is a one-day, intensive writing/publishing workshop where students not only become authors, but they take on the responsibility of publishing their book.  Three to four weeks after the workshop, copies of the student book are delivered and a launch is held to showcase the book.  Books will be available for purchase at the launch party, through the Book in a Day participants, and on Amazon. Thirty students have been chosen to participate in this program.

Cavalier Classic at South Carroll High School

The South Carroll High School Athletic Boosters will sponsor a 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run at South Carroll High School on Saturday, Oct. 27. The race begins at 8 a.m. and registration starts at 7 a.m. in the school lobby. The race will benefit the SCHS athletic teams and the Jessica E Belknap Memorial Scholarship. 

Jessica was a 2009 graduate of SCHS who was killed by a drunk driver while out walking in her neighborhood.  A scholarship has been set up by her family and will be given to a student in the Veterinary Science program, of which Jessica was a graduate. Sponsors for the race and participants are needed. Anyone interested in more information may contact Patty Cullop at barrdc@aol.com.

Veterans Breakfast at Francis Scott Key High School

Francis Scott Key High School would like to invite all veterans to a breakfast in honor of Veterans Day on Thursday, Nov. 8, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the school cafeteria. Guest speakers will be present, including Jacob Altivator, a local historian.

Any interested veteran is invited to stay and share their story as a part of FSK’s oral history project. The morning will conclude with a thank you march of the veterans through the hallways of FSK. College and Career Night – Westminster and Winters Mill High Schools

Westminster and Winters Mill High Schools will unite to present a community College and Career Night on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Westminster High School. Round robin sessions will run from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. and include topics such as financial aid, Advanced Placement, NCAA, SAT vs. ACT, two and four year college experiences, and many more.
