School Notes: Yom Kippur, Special Education and a Town Meeting

Special Education Workshop

The Partners for Success Center of Carroll County Public Schools will sponsor a workshop entitled Around the World of Special Education for parents and school staff on Thursday, October 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carroll Springs School in Westminster.

This “basics” workshop will give participants an overview of the special education process and acquaint them with the terminology and procedures involved in special education. Topics covered will include definitions of special education terms, federal and state laws, the special education cycle, eligibility, advocacy/parent involvement in the IEP process, individualized education plans, and resources. Continuing Education Fair

The 35th Annual Carroll County Continuing Education Fair will be held on Monday, October 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carroll County Agriculture Center Arena located at 706 Agriculture Center in Westminster

Participants will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from more than 125 colleges and training programs.  In addition, counselors from each high school counseling office will be available to answer questions about post-secondary planning. Representatives from the Admissions and Financial Aid Offices of Carroll Community College will also be available to talk with students and parents.

Positive Solutions for Families Workshop

A series of free parenting workshops entitled Positive Solutions for Families will be held on October 9, 16, 23, and 30, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Carroll Springs School in Westminster. A light dinner will be provided.

The workshops offer a positive approach to behavior intervention and parenting in general. The theory and techniques are based on fostering your child’s social emotional development. During the four weeks, participants will talk about ideas for helping children feel safe, loved, special, competent and confident; build relationships and develop friendships; learn how to follow directions and manage their emotions; let them know what their behavior is trying to communicate; and learn new skills to replace challenging behavior. There will be “make and takes” and great door prizes.

Town Meeting

Board President Jennifer Seidel and Superintendent Stephen Guthrie will be hosting a town meeting on Tuesday, October 16, at 7 p.m. at West Middle School, located at 60 Monroe Street in Westminster.

The purpose of the meeting is to create an open dialogue with parents and the community.  Members of the community are invited to attend and address their concerns or ask questions regarding education topics and issues. The meeting is intended to be an open forum; however, depending on the number of participants the time for each speaker may be limited.
