Spring Sports Preview: Lacrosse

Owls and Falcons will be tough in girls lacrosse. For the boys, Westminster has a new coach and Winters Mill looks to improve from last year.

Girls lacrosse is very competitive in Carroll and this year shouldn’t be any different.

Asked for her outlook on the season, Stevens said, "I think we have a strong team overall, because of our 10 top returners. They all work well together, and are such versatile players.’’

"Team has great chemistry, they are very coachable and always willing to go 110%. Very strong, skilled, experience players who never seem to give up,’’ she added.

Stevens feels that Century is the team to beat in the county.

"We hope to improve consistency throughout the season, because we have a tough schedule and we need to be consistent in order to beat all these team, especially in our county,’’ Stevens said.

Winters Mill Girls

The Falcons had a great season last year as they finished 18-1 and were 2A/1A state champs. They were ranked third in the nation by ESPN RISE.

In the preseason rankings, ESPN RISE has the Falcons at 22nd.

The top returners for coach Courtney Vaughn are Erin McMunn, Mandy Buell, Madison Cyr, Sydney and Shelby Trentzsch and Maddie Bodden.

McMunn is signed to play for Princeton next year and is a member of the USA U19 lacrosse team.

Vaughn said the goals for this year are to compete each day whether it is in practice or games and she added that anybody can be beat on any given day.

Westminster Boys

The Owls are the defending county champion. They had a 12-3 record and were 6-1 in the county.

Steve DeFeo takes the reins as Owl coach this season and has an experienced team.

One of the top returners is goalie Eric Natale. He led the county with a 66.2 save percentage.

Other players returning are Luke Thompson, Nick Conroy, Matt Russell, Carter Treuchet, Nate Vanderwoude. Freshman Jesse Uhlman will be counted on at midfield.

Winters Mill Boys

Sal Picataggi welcomes back a squad that was 10-6 last year and 5-2 in the county.

The Falcon strength will be on attack and midfield. Leading the way are A.J. Chase, Chase Cullison, Spenser Love, Tyler Hutson, Teddy Chase, Nick Schultz, Jason Kreimer and Josh Mackley.

Joey McCulloh will be the goalie for the Falcons.

Winters Mill is the only boys lacrosse team in the county to win a state champion. The Falcons performed the feat in 2007.
