The award given statewide was established to reognize schools that have demonstrated a commitment to fiscal responsibility through superior school maintenance. The award recognizes schools for their efforts to maximize the lifespan of existing public school facilities and to ensure that students who attend school in older buildings have the same positive learning experience as their counterparts in newer facilities.
Recipients of the Silver Hammer Award are selected based upon the recommendation of each local education agency in consultation with the state’s Public School Construction Program. Besides Buchanan, other members of the custodial staff at West Middle School are Wayne Collins, Georgia Krug, Charles Morton, Jacob Ness, Robin Redmond and Sean Stonesifer.
