Westminster, Winters Mill Boys Basketball Teams Prepare for Playoffs

Playoff games will begin the week of Feb. 26.

Long Reach High School in Howard County was bustling with anxious basketball coaches and spectators on Sunday as the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association (MPSSAA) playoff schedules were made.

Westminster High School, with a regular season record of 20-3, landed the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A North bracket. It will have a first-round bye and face the winner of the Mergenthaler-Springbrook game in the quarterfinals slated for Feb. 28 at Westminster High School.

Winters Mill High School, 13-10 this season, will be heading to Wheaton High School for the first round of the Class 2A West playoffs on Feb. 26. The winner of that match will take on No. 2 seed Poolesville in the quarterfinals.

The Region Semifinals will follow on Tuesday, March 5, with the Region Finals for Class 1A and 2A schools on Thursday, March 7, and the Class 3A and 4A schools on Friday, March 8.

Other county high schools head into playoff action as well. According to the Carroll County Times Carroll Varsity Page, the following games are scheduled.

  • Century hosts Walkersville
  • Liberty plays at Williamsport
  • North Carroll plays at Clear Spring
  • Manchester Valley plays at Boonsboro
  • South Carroll hosts winner of Liberty-Williamsport game on Feb. 28
  • Francis Scott Key hosts the Catoctin-Middletown winner on Feb. 28.

Sixteen Region Champions will head to the state semifinals at the University of Maryland's Comcast Center on Thursday, March 14, and Friday, March 15, as they try their best to make it to the state finals on Saturday, March 16.
