Why Pearl Harbor Is Important For Westminster High School Band Members

Westminster High School's marching band will march in the Pearl Harbor Parade in Hawaii in December.

The Westminster High School marching band will be traveling to Hawaii in December to represent Maryland in the Pearl Harbor Parade. Students who will be going on the trip are looking forward to the education opportunities as well as the national stage.

Westminster High School Senior Samantha Norman said that her inspiration for the trip is of a more personal nature.

“My grandfather fought in Pearl Harbor so it’s a special thing for me to be able to go down there and represent our state,” Norman said.

Junior Drew Miles said he is looking forward sharing his love of music with a larger, national audience.

“Music has always been the one thing that I can connect with the rest of the world,” Miles said. “Now that I’m going on a bigger scale it’s my chance to break though. It’s a really good opportunity.

The marching band is seeking donations to help cover the estimated $150,000 it will cost to get 100 students and equipment to the event.

"We haven't ever tried something of this scope before," Marching Band Director Jennifer Jones told Patch in June. "We have to get people there, get instruments there, raise money and plan for the entire experience, not just performing."
