Winters Mill Students Qualify for National Conference

Two Winters Mill students won first place awards at the Maryland DECA Career Development Conference.

Members of the DECA Club recently attended their first ever Maryland DECA Career Development Conference.

DECA is a club focusing on careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.

The conference was held in Annapolis with 13 schools from around the state and over 275 participating students.

Winters Mill, currently the only school in the county with an active DECA Club, sent six students to the event.    

Senior Rachel Mascaro placed first in her individual event, Apparel and Accessories Marketing Series, and received a $1,000 scholarship, renewable for four years, to Johnson & Wales University.

Jose Rodriguez, also a senior, placed first in his individual event, Food Marketing Series.

First place winners earn the opportunity to compete at the National Career Development Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, in April. DECA faculty advisor Matt Fogle said Mascaro and Rodriguez are still deciding if they will travel to the national competition.

Brady Udovich and Avery Hill, both seniors, received Honorable Mention for their Sports and Entertainment Marketing Team Event, as did junior Savannah Payne for the Business Services Series individual event and senior Laraib Asif for the Retail Marketing Series Individual Event.
