Westminster's Kern Named Baltimore Sun Athlete of the Year

The Westminster High School senior will attend Wesley College in Delaware in the fall.

Deryk Kern, a senior at Westminster High School, has been selected as the Baltimore Sun Male Athlete of the Year.

Kern competed in both football and basketball during the 2012-2013 school year. As quarterback for the Westminster Owls football team, he tied a state record with seven touchdown passes in a win over Linganore High School. Kern set a new state record with 63 touchdowns in 13 games, and the Owls went to the semifinals.

During the four years Kern played point guard on the Owls basketball team, the team had two consecutive 19-5 seasons and this year won its first county championship in more than 10 years.

Kern also was selected as the co-recipient of the WTTR Male Athlete of the Year Award, which is given to the top male athlete in Carroll County. He will attend Wesley College in Delaware, where he will play quarterback for the Wolverines.
