Winters Mill Captures First Regional Dual Meet Crown

Winters Mill takes South Carroll 34-25.

Winters Mill got revenge on county foe, South Carroll by winning the Class 2A/1A West regional dual meet crown with a 34-25 win.

It was the first regional dual meet title for the Falcons. They continue on their quest for a state title Saturday at Linganore High School. The semifinals get underway at 2 p.m. with the winners meeting in the finals at 5 p.m.

The two schools met for the second time in five days. The Cavaliers downed the Falcons Saturday for the county title in Westminster.

Asked how last Saturday effected his team, Falcon coach John Lowe said, "I could tell the next day by the number of texts and calls and e-mails that I got that they were really fired up. They really wanted them back.’’

Wednesday night in Winfield, the two met again on the wrestling mat, but first they had to down other opponents. South Carroll seeded first in the region tangled with fourth-seeded Williamsport first for the right to advance to the final. The Cavaliers downed the Wildcats, 43-25.

Winters Mill, seeded second, faced third seeded Southern Garrett in their first match. The Falcons edged the Rams, 35-34. The Rams had two losses during the season and both were to Winters Mill.

"It’s hard for a coach or any team to win twice against the same guy a few days later. Chase was big, Wes Cook turning his Plumley match around. Those were big,’’ said Lowe.

Winters Mill used three pins and a major decision to defeat the Cavaliers. South Carroll, which used bonus points to win Saturday, only garnished two pins and a major decision Wednesday.

"This is a monster, monster region. I think all four of these teams could win the states. I think we were lucky enough to do it. I think the guys feel like they can take it all,’’ said Lowe.

"We knew it was going to be a great match. It’s a very well trained team. They have a lot of great wrestlers. They just beat us tonight. The better team won tonight, they wanted it more and executed better than we did,’’ said Cavalier coach Bryan Hamper.
