Winters Mill Season Ends with Regional Championship Loss to South Carroll

The third time was not a charm for Winters Mill as they lost to South Carroll, 59-34 in front of a standing room only crowd for the Class 2A West region crown.

The two teams split their regular season games. Winters Mill ended the season at 20-5, while the Cavaliers improved to 24-1.

The attendance was put at 2,000 by South Carroll’s Jim Carnes. He said they had to turn away about 500 more.

"It was a good night for Carroll County basketball. I wish it was a little bit different, but this is what you want. The community out, you want this kind of crowd. I think it was two good basketball teams, I think it was their night. I give them all the credit in the world,’’ said Falcon coach Dave Herman.

Winters Mill had one lead as Robby Jenkins hit the first points of the game on a three-pointer. South Carroll scored the next three baskets, two from beyond the arc which started a long night for the visitors. South Carroll was up 23-10 after the first eight minutes of play.

"We brought a lot of energy, they brought a lot of energy and they hit 10 of their first 14 shots and six three’s. You are down 10-12 and you are battling up stream the rest of the time, the rest of the night. It took us out of what we wanted to do and when you are down 15 and you play good defense and you get a hand in and they hit a three. That beginning really stunted us,’’ said Herman.

There was a play in the third period which said the night belonged to South Carroll. Jeff Martin dribbled down the court and dribbled the ball off his knee. The ball went straight to Ryan McTavish, who hit a lay-up for two points.

The Falcons used the three-point play in handing South Carroll their only loss, but Friday night they hit only five. Jenkins hit four of them, as Evan Horn had the other.

South Carroll played a tight defense which kept the Falcon big men in check. Jenkins led Winters Mill with 14 points, Horn chipped in 11, Craig Bowen had five, while Brian Martin and TJ Sands had two points each.

"I am really proud of our kids, I really am. I am going to miss this group,’’ Herman said.

Ryan McTavish topped the Cavaliers with 21 points, Dan Mullen backed him up with 16, while Gavin McTavish had seven, Eric Hunsberger, six; Ryan Tate, five; Jeff Martin and Shane Martin had two points each.

Ryan McTavish now has 1,480 points for his career and moves within seven of tying Westminster’s Herman Costley’s county record of 1,487.
