Flood Testing a Tile Shower

Flood Testing is a term used loosely by many contractors because it’s not required in every state, township, region etc…  When a tile shower is built there are many ways it can be waterproofed (prior to tiling) to ensure maximum protection of the structure.  Water will leak behind the tile and grout which is normal and the water will dissipate after contacting the waterproofing membrane or run to the weep holes in the shower drain.  In order to stay ahead of the game, a contractor must have faith in the installation and products being used from start to finish.

Building a shower is simple but it takes time.  Here are some basic steps:

·         Demolition.

·         Install drainage piping, shower drain and all necessary plumbing valves

·         Install shower unit (whichever method applies).  Including cement board, waterproof tile board, preformed pan, mud floor etc…

·         Waterproof the Unit (typically a liquid or fabric membrane or combination of both)

·         FLOOD TEST THE UNIT.

·         Install Tile

·         Grout

Rewinding to the Flood Test:

After the unit is waterproofed (and cured) the shower drain can be plugged with a rubber test ball and then fill water in the shower base (Yes, it’s that simple…)  Make a mark on the wall where the water is filled to and leave it sit for a few hours, overnight or a day or two.  If the water level does not drop, the waterproofing is not leaking and that’s a Good thing!

After speaking with an inspector here in East Pennsboro Township (Enola, PA), flood tests are not required on permitted jobs.  He stressed that if a contractor is knowledgeable enough to pass all required inspections for a project, the rest should be included in their warranty including leaks.  In recognizing all the different ways to build and waterproof a shower, this particular inspector noted that the process is not forced but he likes to know that some will proceed with the additional testing.

While planning a bathroom remodeling project, make sure to ask your contractor what is required in your town and either way I’m sure that your chosen professional will comply with the process upon your request.
