Watch: Comptroller Franchot Delivers Award to Carroll Food Sunday

Carroll County Food Sunday received the inaugural William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award.

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot visited to hand deliver the William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award.

Close to two dozen volunteers and board members greeted Franchot at Carroll County Food Sunday. Chairman of Food Sunday's Board of Directors Ed Leister and Commissioner Haven Shoemaker flanked Franchot as he explained why Food Sunday was chosen to receive the award.

"I believe that what you do here represents the very best of Maryland," Franchot told Leister and the volunteers.

Franchot noted that Food Sunday serves thousands of residents a year, in an efficient and respectable manner, with one part-time employee and with minimal county funding. Franchot said that with the current economic environment, this operation represents "the wave of the future."

Shoemaker added,  "[Food Sunday] represents the spirit of Carroll County. We are a people who pull eachother up by the bootstraps."

Leister received the award on behalf of the organization and said that Food Sunday couldn't do what it does without volunteers.

Congratulations, Food Sunday! You've been feeding those who need grocery help for decades on a shoestring budget with a minimum of fuss and fanfare. Carroll County Food Sunday deserves this well-earned recognition!

I was very proud to see Maryland State Comptroller Comptroller Franchot come to Carroll County to deliver the William Donald Schaefer Annual Excellence Award. As a former Assistant State Comptroller who was also friends and worked with former State Comptrollers, J. Millard Tawes, Louis l. Goldstein, William Donald Schaefer Peter Franchot, these gentlemen regardless how far right some of these County Commissioners are, these state wide public officials alwys had nothing but good in their hearts for Carroll County and its citizens. As William Donald Schaefer used to end his remarks, Maryland"s Best and "Do It Now"William Donald Schaefer will never be forgotten as he will always be known as the Maryland 's best well known Politican, Baltimore City Council President, Mayor, Governor, Comptroller . HE DID IT ALL and as a Democrat

Romeo, Franchot did say yesterday that many people know Schaefer for his big projects -- stadiums and the Inner Harbor -- but the people who really knew him knew he was more dedicated to the "small people", the ones who needed it most.

Kim. Thanks a lot for the article on Governor Schaefer. Franchot defeted Governor Schaefer re-election term for State Comptroller, and those of us who worked for and knew Schaefer well, he never took this defete by Franchot lightly. By the way . Schaefer gave most of his assets, to his dedicated employees.
