The event has been renamed the Tommy Dell Memorial Dairy Steer Show.
Both Beef and Dairy Steer Showmanship contests were held on Thursday, Aug. 4 at the Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair. The event kicked off with a moment of silence for Tommy Dell, a local farmer who died in a farming accident last year. Dell grew up attending and participating in the 4-H Fair. The event has been renamed The Tommy Dell Memorial Dairy Steer Show in honor of Dell. Following the moment of silence and dedication to Dell, the competition got under way. During showmanship, exhibitors compete against others of the same age on their ability to present their animal. Though the two contests may appear similar to the untrained eye, there are a number of differences in what the exhibitor must do in order to succeed. Attire According to…

Swine remains one of the more popular animals for exhibitors to show at the Carroll County Fair.
The market swine show at the Carroll County Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 3 was another demonstration of just how popular pigs are among exhibitors. This year there are 239 pigs shown by approximately 132 exhibitors, said swine superintendent Vicki Wagner. And this isn’t even the most pigs that have ever been at the fair. “I think in 2008 we had the maximum amount possible, with about 167 kids. We showed for three days,” Wagner said. Market swine is often a project chosen by first-year exhibitors for a number of reasons. Wagner said she believes that probably 65 to 75 percent of exhibitors who start their 4-H or FFA careers showing pigs stick with the species until they leave their respective program. “They’re an easier project to start out in. …

A historical perspective on the celebration of agriculture in Carroll County and the birth of the 4-H Fair.
Historically the summer and end of harvest events have played an important role in Carroll County because of our agricultural roots. The history of this week’s Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair at the Carroll County Agricultural Center lends an extra insight into the traditional family values that are celebrated in Carroll County summers. Before 1865, the business of farming was, for the most part, a subsistence existence. Farmers were essentially self-sufficient. However, after the Civil War, farmers became increasingly “dependent on creditors, merchants and railroads for their livelihoods. These relationships created opportunities for economic gain but also obligations, hardships, and risks that many farmers did not welcome,” notes James I…

The 4-H Parade was held on Sunday.
The 4-H and FFA Fair kicked off Saturday morning and the heat didn't keep people from showing up and having fun. The parade, one of the first Fair events, helps to promote and advertise 4-H.

The Annual Fair kicks off Saturday.
Carroll County has grown tremendously in the past 30 years but at the heart of Carroll County remains its agricultural roots. These agricultural and farming roots are celebrated and highlighted at the annual 4-H and FFA Fair at the Ag Center. And if you live in Westminster, you know it's fair time. The Ag Center will be buzzing with activity (and animals and crafts and food and people) from July 30 until August 5. There are family activities and contests being judged every day. See the Fair schedule here. Debbie Weishaar is the Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair Manager. Three of her children grew up involved in 4-H and one of her children is currently in 4-H. Weishaar said community members should check out the variety of exhibits …

How can anyone complain about having to walk? Handicapped or not you can't go to any fair...anywhere, or carnival, or amusement park and not be prepared to have to walk. And as for having to pay, the Carroll County Fair is a free fair, one of the only free fairs in the State. I can tell you for a fact that in a effort to keep the fair free the folks that run the fair started charging for parking …   more ›
