Tell us in our poll or in comments if English should be the official language of Carroll County government.
The Board of Carroll County Commissioners will discuss a proposed ordinance to make English the official language in Carroll County this Thursday. Commissioner Haven Shoemaker said he has patterned the proposed ordinance after a similar measure passed in Frederick County in February. "Unfortunately today, many immigrants don't embrace our language or culture," Shoemaker said. "This, in the future, will have a deleterious effect on America from a social standpoint, and for our ability to compete economically." David Rocah, staff attorney for the ACLU of Maryland, said the Carroll County proposed ordinance is "a pointless, mean-spirited, and self-contradictory law that seeks to address a non-existent problem." Information collected by police through the use of automatic license plate readers could lead to violations of privacy, according to lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union. The civil liberties group Monday said in a statement that it had filed a public information request with local and state law enforcement agencies in 35 states seeking details on how long the data is stored. Martin O’Malley. The ACLU of Maryland is among the groups that pushed for the state law barring employers from asking for Facebook passwords or to access private accounts. This year, the group highlighted an incident that occurred last year when former correctional officer Robert Collins said he was asked to give his Facebook …

The American Civil Liberties Union argues the electronic petition form invites fraud.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland has sent a letter to the State Board of Elections, voicing its concerns about the electronic petition form currently being used to solicit signatures by a group that is attempting to overturn the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act was passed by the Maryland State Legislature by a narrow margin earlier this year and will allow certain undocumented immigrants to attended Maryland state colleges at the discounted in-state tuition rate. State Del. Neil Parrott is spearheading the effort to overturn the legislation, which is set to go into effect on July 1. The group is collecting signatures in a traditional way – sending out volunteers and canvassing the public. It has also built a website that allows …

Commissioner, how many of Carroll County's laws contain Latin legal terms? Looks like your plan will void a number of laws and contracts. Are you prepared to explain the expense of correcting that to county residents?   more ›
