Maryland Utilities Companies Must Provide Smart Meter Options

The Maryland Public Service Commission ruled Monday that customers will have additional options, which may include opting out of smart meters.

Maryland utilities customers will have more options when it comes to smart meter installation at their homes and businesses. The Maryland Public Service Commission ruled Monday that public interest requires that Baltimore Gas & Electric, Potomac Electric Power Company and Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative provide customers with an additional option related to smart meters, according to a ruling on the commission's website.  Customers have complained about the health consequences that they believe will occur as a result of radio frequency emissions from the smart meters. The commission found no "convincing evidence" to support that claim, but acknowledged a "good-faith belief" to the contrary from customers. As such, the commission …

BGE Not Providing Individual Estimated Restoration Times

Officials from the utilities company said the service won't be provided because the damage from Sandy is expected to be widespread.

Because damage caused by Hurricane Sandy is expected to be widespread, Baltimore Gas & Electric officials said they will not provide individual estimated restoration times as it typically does with storms. As Sandy continues its trek into central Maryland, the officials warn that the number of outages are expected to spike significantly. The utilities company previously reported that several hundred thousand outages are anticipated as a result of Hurricane Sandy. In a news release, BGE officials said there will likely be extensive damage to the company's electric distribution system if whole trees and large tree limbs fall on power lines and other equipment. Customers may experience multiple outages over the course of several days. Rachael…

The outages could last several days, according to a news release from the utilities company. About 1,300 of the recruited 2,000 out-of-state utility workers are scheduled to arrive Sunday, ahead of the storms, the release said. The remainder is expected to arrive throughout the week. Baltimore Gas & Electric has recruited approximately 2,000 out-of-state linemen and support workers to join "thousands" of the utilities company's employees to assist in restoring electric service following Hurricane Sandy, according to a news release. The crews are currently setting up at operation sites across the state, the release said. BGE officials say the workers will work "around-the-clock" to restore electic service following power outages as soon as it's safe to do so. PSC: MD Utilities Companies Can No Longer Bill 24 Hours After Outage

The Maryland Public Service Commission found the practice to be an additional burden on customers already facing hardships.

The Maryland Public Service Commission announced Friday that Maryland utilities companies can no longer charge customers for sales lost during the first 24 hours of a major power outage. Previously, the companies were able to include the charges for electricity that would have have been delivered if not for the outage in their Bill Stabilization Adjustment calculations, according to a commission statement. Baltimore Gas & Electric, Delmarva Power and Light Company, Potomac Electric Power Company and Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative are all being ordered to revise their calculations to accommodate the ruling. Prior to this most recent change, utilities companies were able to charge throughout extended outages. The commission revoked …

Letter to the Editor: BGE Urges Customers to Plan for Outages

A Baltimore Gas & Electric official shares tips on preparing for Hurricane Sandy.

Editor's Note: The following letter to the editor is from Jeannette M. Mills, Baltimore Gas & Electric's vice president of customer operations and chief customer officer, encourages residents to actively prepare for impending storms and anticipated power outages. While the exact path of Hurricane Sandy continues to fluctuate, as soon as it became apparent there could be a possible East Coast landfall, BGE began the process of pre-mobilizing employees, calling in assistance from out-of-state crews and preparing for a hurricane impact. This is expected to be a very dangerous storm with high winds, heavy rain and possible flooding – all of which can cause whole trees, tree limbs and water to damage our electric equipment, resulting in outages…
