Miller Gets His Bust

A state senator wants a new state bird; one man's technolgical fortress is his castle; and the Senate president feels snubbed by Obama.

It's not a statue in front of the office building that bares his name but Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller did receive a bust of himself this week courtesy of the Regional Manufacturing Institute. Sen. Kathy Klausmeier, a Perry Hall Democrat, gave a sneak preview of the small, light-weight bust of Miller moments before presenting it to the Senate's top dog. "You can't have too much Mike Miller," Klausmeier said. The technology is similar to what was used in a scene of Jurassic Park 3 where a copy of a velociraptor's larynx was recreated. The institute offered legislators in Annapolis the opportunity to have themselves scanned into a computer and get busts of themselves. Miller seemed impressed with the petite bust but joked that it …

Jones Touchdown Means Free Furniture in Maryland

One local furniture chain will be reimbursing more than a half-million in weekend sales after Ravens speedster Jacoby Jones returned the third-quarter kickoff for a touchdown in Super Bowl XLVII Sunday.

Some lucky Baltimore-area residents enjoyed their new couches a whole lot more in the second half of Sunday's Super Bowl. Because Jacoby Jones returned the opening kickoff of the third quarter for a touchdown, Gardiner's Furniture will fulfill a promise to refund all purchases made in their stores over the weekend. Sports blog Deadspin has a video of the 108-yard return, the longest play in NFL postseason history. On its Facebook page Sunday night, Gardiner's Furniture posted: That was amazing! Furniture is FREE! If you made a purchase this weekend, it's your lucky day. Go Ravens! John J. Campion Jr. wrote: "Thank you Jacoby Jones for our new table set!!!!" Kalea Kaiser posted: "Yeah baby! So glad we picked this weekend to buy!" According …

Westminster Business Owners Head to the Super Bowl

John and Ben Yingling will be cheering on the Baltimore Ravens from the 50-yard line at the Super Bowl.

John Yingling of Crawford-Yingling Insurance & Risk Management has been to the big game before. He saw the San Francisco 49ers take on the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX in Palo Alto, California.  But this time he said it will be even better because he is going to the Super Bowl with his son, Ben, who also works at Crawford-Yingling Insurance & Risk Management. "It means a lot to go with Ben," John said. "He was one when I went to my first Super Bowl, he’s 28 now and it’s just great bonding for a father and son to take a trip like this." John added that that there is a lot of wow packed into this particular Super Bowl.  "It’s going to be even more spectacular because it’s our hometown team,  we get to see Harbaugh versus Harbaugh, Ray …

MPT Wagers Crab Cakes, Berger Cookies Against San Fran Station

Maryland Public Television’s CEO made a Super Bowl bet with his counterpart at a San Francisco station.

Larry Unger expects to be swimming in Ghiradelli chocolate and sourdough bread after the Baltimore Ravens win the Super Bowl. The president and CEO of Maryland Public Television, which is based in Owings Mills, posed a wager to San Francisco’s KQED that if the Ravens win, they send MPT some treats from San Francisco. If the 49ers win, it’s crab cakes and Berger cookies for KQED. “When the Ravens made it into the Super Bowl, we started thinking immediately, ‘What can we do that’s fun and brings and a little more notoriety to the game?’” Unger said. “And we came up with ‘let’s make a bet.’” John Boland, president and CEO at KQED, accepted immediately. While Unger knows Boland from the public media circuit, and says he’s a really nice guy, he…

Dear editor: "San Fran" is generally frowned upon as a reference to San Francisco (as is "Frisco"). From a style point of view, it might be better to just abbreviate the city name or retool the header so as not to include the "San Fran" reference. Just a little feedback from a copy editor and someone who has lived in the Bay Area.   more ›
