Artworks & Apparel Boutique moved from its space on Main Street to the Winchester Exchange at 15 E. Main St. Owner Nikki Ratti saids she is excited about the new location. “It's been wonderful to see all of our regular customers follow us and we are excited that we are finding many new customers due to the relocation!” Ratti said. “We have also loved hearing so many positive comments regarding the appearance of the store and access to parking.” Frisco Family Pub closed in December of 2012, and new Italian restaurant, le Ragazze will open in its place. Coming, going and under new management -- Patch highlights business happenings in the Westminster area.
New Business Blue Bistro & Catering took over the former A Gourmet Affair deli. Blue Bistro co-owner Lori Javier (yes, the wife of Rafael Javier who owns Rafael's on Main Street) said they intend to keep some of the old deli favorites but add new menu items as well as a bistro-style dinner on weekends and catering services. Firehouse Subs, a national chain with a commitment to supporting the local fire department, is open at 625 Baltimore Blvd, near Petsmart. The Sideways Cafe is now open in what used to be Tuscany Cafe at 84 East Main St. According to its website, The Sideways Cafe offers a full menu of food using locally grown produce and ingredients in addition to a full bar. Peggie, if you like the lunch menu at Blue Bistro Deli you should come in on Fri & Sat evenings for dinner. I have been there 4 times since they started serving dinner and I am always pleased.   more ›
Jeannine Morber talks about the challenges, and benefits, of doing business in Carroll County.
Jeannine Morber arrived in Carroll County in 2001 after her husband retired from the US Navy. Morber calls herself a "born and bred New Englander" who has found success in Maryland in both her education and career. Morber said she has 25 years of sales and marketing experience, a degree in Computer Science and she is on schedule to earn an MBA next spring. When not running her business, Morber Marketing Group, she is teaching technology marketing, public relations and WordPress classes at Carroll and Frederick Community Colleges. Morber said that opening her business was "the smartest decision I ever made." Jonathan Weetman: "I wouldn’t say I am comfortable with the number as long as the number is representative of people who are looking for work not being able to find it."
Carroll County's unemployment rate dropped from 6.5 percent in January to 5.8 percent in April. Jonathan Weetman, administrator of Operations and Small Business Development for Carroll County's Department of Economic Development said that although the number is decreasing, he is not comfortable with it as long as there are people looking for work who can't find it. Weetman said that the national employment rate isn't always representative of what is happening at the local level. There often is not a direct correlation between the national, state, and local numbers month to month, he said. The national unemployment rate is 8.2 percent. You’ve Got it Made is a promotional products business that supplies advertising specialties and imprinted apparel to businesses of all sizes. The company also provide custom party favors. Matthaei worked for Orion Pictures for over 15 years before deciding she needed a change. "Traveling four days a week was just too much. The Superfresh grocery chain notified state officials on Monday that it intends to eliminate about 1,500 jobs in Maryland, with job terminations to begin as early as July 6. Michael Raia, a spokesman for the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, said the agency had received notification from Superfresh for precisely 1,477 terminations at 22 separate stores across the state, including its Westminster location. Under state law, employers are required to notify state officials when they are planning mass firings, he said. So-called WARN notices are also required to be sent directly to the employees affected, Raia said. Local businesses can meet with state delegates at the Chamber of Commerce's Annual Legislative Breakfast with the Annapolis Delegation.
There is much to talk about as the economy continues to challenge businesses and government agencies alike. In early January, Carroll County Chamber of Commerce members will have the opportunity to meet with state delegates to discuss what Carroll businesses can expect in the upcoming year. The Annual Legislative Breakfast with the Annapolis Delegation will take place at the New Windsor Conference Center on 500 Main Street in New Windsor on Tuesday, January 4. The cost to attend the event is $10 for Chamber members and their guests and $25 for non-members. Register by December 27. The event is sponsored by Carroll Occupational Health and Constellation Energy.
